When James Ford first announced that he was running as an independent to challenge Tim Uppal, I said "
kudos." I think people should get involved, and stand up for what they think is right. They said it might have been legal, but it was unethical. After I got to know James Ford a little more, I discovered that he was a much worse choice for MP than Tim Uppal. Then,
Ford damn near beat Uppal. Did beat him, in two out of the three municipalities in this riding, actually. Then, to my surprise,
Ford kept after him. Started saying that Uppal was unethical, and didn't deserve the job of MP. And I started to wonder if there had been any moral principle behind Ford's attempt at unseating him at all. Then, there was
a protest outside the newly elected MP's constituency office on his first day in Ottawa. In response to that, the Sherwood Park News ran
an editorial saying that the voters had spoken, and that Uppal deserved the benefit of the doubt. In response, Ford sent
a letter to the editor. In my estimation, he has gone completely off the rails. A couple of choice quotes:Would you, as the editor of the Sherwood Park News, have an employee stay on after he has broken laws?and...Uppal and the Conservative party have already proven lawbreaking...Aside from his slaughtering of English grammar (this guy wrote a book?), let's do a little fact-checking, shall we? Ford himself maintained that nothing Uppal did in the nomination process was illegal, or even contrary to party rules. It was merely unethical in his view. The only other legal isues that have been raised with regards to Uppal were
a bunch of lawsuits he was involved with. All of them, I believe, have been settled out of court. So where, exactly, is Mr. Ford getting this idea that Uppal is a law breaker? And speaking of being a law breaker, Mr. Ford might want to bone up on defamation law.I'm not saying. I'm just saying.Ford then proceeds to assert that "we" can ask the ethics commissioner and Elections Canada to immediately place an MP on a leave of absence, review his case, have him resign if charged, and set out an immediate by-election.Can "we"? Can "we" really? 'Cause I took a honours degree in political science focussed on accountability in the federal parliament, and I'm pretty sure all of that is bullshit. All of it.The ethics commissioner deals with MPs, not nominees. And with conflicts of interest, not with law enforcement. Is he misunderstanding the role of the ethics commissioner, or accusing Uppal of being in an undeclared conflict of interest?Elections Canada enforces only elections legislation. Again, does Ford not get it, or is he accusing Uppal of having cheated in the election? To my knowledge, neither of them have the ability to place MPs on leaves of absence, charge them with legal offenses outside of their mandates, require them to resign, or even - in the case of Elections canada - set out elections.I mean, come on. How did this guy almost become MP of Edmonton-Sherwood Park without knowing that the Prime Minister sets by-election dates? What else does this guy not know about the basic functioning of the job he wants? This has gotten completely out of hand. Ford needs to backen ze up. Pronto. And for the sake of his reputation, stop talking.
