Honestly, don't these people know I have an exam tomorrow morning?OK, so
the deal now (updated
here)is that Rae and Iggy are both on board with a fast leadership process, and LeBlanc is going to drop out, and Dion is going to resign on Wednesday (again). The Liberal party has come up with a proposal to speed up its leadership contest and find a replacement next month in time for a crucial budget vote. That vote could plunge the country into an election or see the Harper Conservatives replaced by a coalition government. The proposal, which the Liberal party executive was poised to consider by conference call late Sunday, would give every party member a vote by a combination of phone and online ballots. The idea was being vigorously promoted by Rae.However, Ignatieff's camp was arguing that the proposal would violate the party's constitution and that the May 2 vote to choose Dion's successor should go ahead as planned.Iggy's camp is right. It would violate the constitution. It would be nice, but it's not legal.Update: it looks like the national executive has said no to the plan.People are claiming that Iggy's camp is pushing for the matter to be decided at Caucus on Wednesday. It can't be. The national executive (not the caucus) can select an interim leader (if Dion resigns (again)), and they may take the advice of the Caucus. I think they would be well advised to do so. But even if they do so, the only way the May vote is going to be a mere "ratification" of that decision on a permanent basis is if Rae pulls out of the race. That's a degree of magnanimity that I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for.Update: I seem to be the only person who knows all this about interim leaders, because the CBC reports that this is basically a done deal. I'm going to substantiate my argument and post separately. And let me say... as a person who places a great deal of impormtance on the idea of separating the political sing of the party from the membership wing of the party, the leadership decision doesn't belong to caucus, and they had better not attempt to take it from the members. Because I'm running starkly low on reasons to be a member as it is.
