Highly Bemusing

There will be two electoral reform do-overs in BC this year. In May, the British Columbia government will re-do a referendum on adopting BC-STV, a more proportional and more democratic electoral method than the rest of the country uses. Last election, it was defeated, barely, with only 59% of the popular vote. (It needed 60%. Don't ask me why.)And at their national convention, the Liberal Party of Canada will vote on whether to adopt a weighted one-member one-vote method of selecting their leader. So instead of having to get elected as a delegate to convention and paying over $1000 in delegate fees and travel expenses, all you have to do is have a membership, and show up at your local poll on election day. That one got less than 50% support at the last convention, and it needed 75%, or something like that. The rest of the constitutional amendments passed, but this one was voted on separately. (Don't ask me why.)According to Calgary Grit, they will also be voting on a measure to effectively eliminate the federal nature of the LPC, and centralize more of the party machinery. Another good suggestion that I've been arguing for since the Red Ribbon renewal commission that preceded the last national convention. It's really a shame that the party brass have come around to my point of view only after I ceased giving a damn what happened to the LPC. Otherwise I might be happy about it.As it is, I'm bemused.
