Canadian democracy is broken. The signs of the damage are everywhere. Low respect for politicians; low voter turnout, especially among youth; and a feeling that government is disconnected from people are just a few examples. But none of that changes the importance and power of government. It only affects its legitimacy. Gauntlet.ca is here to advocate for individual Canadians to get involved in their government, and change it in ways that will make it more legitimate. There are two principles that are fundamental. The first is that whatever system exists, it should be adhered to, and actively participated in. We cannot hope to improve Canada through reforming its institutions unless we affirm the legitimacy of those institutions by participating in them and adhering faithfully to the expectations they place on us.The second principle is this: the system should be made more democratic. That is to say, it should be made easier for Canadians to more significantly, effectively and equitably participate in their self-governance.There are a number of things which mediate the relationship between Canadians and their government in a way that is detrimental to the significant, equitable and efficient participation of Canadians in their self governance. The most important of these things are: political parties, electoral method, and election financing.Together, these two principles require something strange. They require a commitment to participate in the seriously flawed institutions of Canadian democracy, and work to repair them from the inside. Gauntlet.ca will serve to aid and chronicle my efforts, mean though they may be, to do exactly that.
