I read an interesting comment on the front-page of some newspaper or another today, that a senior Conservative official said that this budget is being "handled by grown-ups". So no political games this time. Well that's good news, I guess. The bad news is that it took almost losing power before the Conservatives thought about maybe not having infants in control of the nation's finances. The NDP and the Bloq are promising to vote against the budget no matter what, holding out hope that the coalition that Dion agreed to and Michael Ignatieff supported will hold strong if the Liberals decide to vote against the budget. The Liberals, which is to say Michael Ignatieff, will support the budget of course. The reasons are plain. First, positive poll numbers notwithstanding, his party is not ready to fight another election. Second, he is still only interim leader of the Liberal Party of Canada until May. Any decision he made to vote against the budget would come under immediate criticism as coming from a person who has not only never faced Canadian voters, but who has not ever even won a vote of his own party's membership. All that if he were to throw Canada into an election. Imagine if he were to usurp the Prime Minister's chair. Third, Canadians do not want an election right now. Fourth, the budget is probably helpful enough, thanks to the fact that there are grown-ups involved. Now the NDP and the Bloq are going to call Ignatieff a hypocrit and call the Liberals liars for not following through on the coalition arrangement. People won't buy it.So after all that excitement a couple of months ago, expect tomorrow to be dull in the extreme.
