So the tories have dumped, for no good reason,
two of their duly-nominated candidates in Ontario. This is not a problem limited to t he Tories. This is a problem that exists in all the major parties. Why should you care? Hmm...The laws of Canada are written by the house of commons.Because of the first-past-the-post electoral system, the house of commons is usually controlled by a single party that received only minority support in the election.Because the leaders of the parties are able to control who will and will not be nominated for their party in any given riding, all the members of the caucus are dependent on the leader of their party for their jobs. There are no external requirements on political parties to run their nomination or leadership races in ways that respect democratic principles. So the only people who matter in the House of Commons are the party leaders.Canadians don't pick the party leaders. Party members do.So the laws of Canada are being written by people who were undemocratically selected by a self-selecting sub-set of Canadians, who need not even be eligible to vote. But don't worry. We have the greatest democracy in the world.
