Canada Votes 2008

Post-Election 2008 Post (post)

OK, in numerical list format. Here we go.
  1. Uppal-Gate 2008 (The Finale)I am shocked that James Ford got over 30% of the vote in Edmonton-Sherwood Park. Shocked. My cynicism with regards to independent candidates in this country has been severely shaken.

3 out of 5 is Awful.

Update: Duncan is in the lead in Edmonton-Strathcona. I'm pretty sure about the other two predictions, though.I made some predictions. Three were good. Two were not. First, the results from the election are outside the 95% certainty threshold. So no, Calgary Grit's projections were not close.Second, Jim Ford did a hell of a lot better than 15-20% in my riding of Edmonton-Sherwood Park.

Things to Look For Tomorrow

I'll be studying while I watch the results on TV. Here's what I'll be looking for:
  1. Elizabeth May - Does the exposure of a nationally televised leaders debate trump the exposure of two and a half years as a Minister?Prediction: No.
  2. Coalition Math - Will the Liberals and the NDP combined have more seats than the Conservatives? A two-part coalition is a lot easier to hold together, and doesn't require anyone to give any significant power to the separatists.Prediction: It's close, but no.

Gauntlet Predicts Lowest Ever Turnout

Based on the advanced poll numbers, we should actually come in under the dismal 2004 turnout of 60.9%. I personally predict about 60.5%.We have to do something. We do, though. Don't we?Let's DO something.

OK. Now I'm confused.

So I thought I owed the Green Party $100. Seems not.In fact, according to this guy, a Green supporter should never vote strategically, because they are in a different league. Even if that means electing a Harper majority, do not vote anything but Green. They put the planet before people, he says.

James Ford's Race

I've commented on how glad I am that James Ford is fighting back against what he perceives as an unfair nomination process in Edmonton-Sherwood Park.I'm glad that someone is drawing attention to the problem of how our political parties are not particularly democratic. That said, there are some things I need to say about James Ford.

Holy shit. I owe the Green Party $100!

Ask and thou shalt receive. Sometimes, less than 24 hours later.

Remember This?

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9iT7HmblXE&hl=en&fs=1]Elections Canada says Stephen Harper spent $1.3M more than he was allowed to spend in the last federal election, and accounted for it in a way that it would be refunded to his candidates. Stephen Harper's response was to accuse Elections Canada of liberal bias, and to sue them to keep the money he doesn't deserve. He then called an election, contrary to the spirit of his fixed-election-date law, before any of this could be sorted out by the courts.

I'll donate it.

The Green Party, if it were to throw its support behind a different party, could prevent Conservatives from being elected in "dozens" of ridings in this country. They also stand to lose $1.87 per year per vote they sacrifice. With thousands of votes, that's a lot of money.

You gotta be proud.

Author (paraphrasing): Stephen Harper offered "financial considerations" to dying MP Chuck Cadman if he would vote with the Conservatives.Stephane Dion (paraphrasing): That's bribery, and it's a crime.Stephen Harper (paraphrasing): That's defamation. I'm suing.Author (paraphrasing): I have it on tape.
